ubuntu 18.04 premade image cannot start X

Hi,
I'm running the latest EVE-NG Pro, Intel CPU, VT-X enabled.
I followed the instructions at https://www.eve-ng.net/index.php/docume ... ost-image/
and downloaded the premade image linux-ubuntu-18.04-desktop.tar.gz from mega.
After booting it briefly shows the darkpurple background and the mouse pointer for a few seconds and then a black screen which
"seems" to be stuck at the line
dev/vda1: clean, 552599/6111232 files, 7119295/24414464 blocks
I can in fact switch to another console with CTRL-ALT-F2 and there I get the login prompt. Need to wait 5 minutes as it seems that X is
trying several times to start but fails (flickering).
After logging in, I started looking around and it seems that X cannot start because of:
open /dev/dri/card0: no such file or directory.
Indeed, the /dev/dri directory is missing when I check. But system is reporting me the presence of a VGA device.
I double checked with the docker eve-gui-server node and there the /dev/dri/card0 file does exist.
I also noticed that gdm is not happing during boot:
I tried to create a custom image from a ubuntu ISO, but had the same result. Google shows that people running ubuntu om virtualbox had similar error which was fixed in later releases of virtualbox. (I'm running EVE in Vmware)
Do I need to make some extra change in vSphere maybe?
Many thanks,
Sven.
